Texts for PHYS 787

Cosmology:

  • Introduction to Cosmology, Ryden. Good intuitive introduction, at a 4th year undergrad level. If you have never done a cosmology course, you should read this first.

  • Structure Formation in the Universe, T. Padmanabhan, 1993, Camb. Univ. Press. Primary textbook for this course. Well organized and detailed. Excellent for structure formation, but getting out of date.

  • Cosmological Physics John A. Peacock, Camb. Univ. Press.
Cheapest ($39.95 CDN) at www.chapters.ca. WWW page for the book, including errata Some topics are more up-to-date than Padmanabhan.

  • Principle of Physical Cosmology, P.J.E. Peebles, 1993, Princeton Univ. Press. Very broad but organization is confusing and ``threads'' can be difficult to follow.

  • Cosmological Inflation and Large-scale Structure, A.R. Liddle & D.H. Lythe, 2000, Camb. Univ. Press. As title implies, the emphasis is on inflation. WWW

  • Modern Cosmology, Dodelson. A more advanced course in structure formation. GR-based and formal but comprehensive.

  • Cosmology, Weinberg. Similar to Dodelson.

Related topics:

  • Galactic Dynamics, J. Binney & S. Tremaine, 1987, Princeton Univ. Press. The ``bible'' for galaxy dynamicists.

  • Gravitational Lenses: Study Edition, P. Schneider, J. Ehlers & EE. Falco, 1992. Springer-Verlag. The ``bible'' for gravitational lensers.

  • Galaxy Formation, M.S. Longair, 1998, Springer-Verlag. Less formal, but very intuitive physical arguments.

  • Galaxies in the Universe: An Introduction, L.S. Sparke & J.S. Gallagher, 2000, Camb. Univ. Press. Aimed at upper-year undergraduates. Would be good to read before leaping into Binney & Tremaine. WWW
